Latest Acquisitions

Was in Port Stanley last week, which meant I had to visit my favourite place to shop for jewellery, Frankly Scarlett (which doesn't have a website, but should!).  The store has two floors of inexpensive, funky jewellery and handbags, and I came home with the necklace pictured above (I love the Eiffel tower and key charms, and the heart is a locket that opens).

I also made an addition to my already ridiculously large ring collection.  I'm not a big fan of "cute", when it comes to jewellery, but in this case, I had to take it home (pastel flowers, and a bee, with little sparkly stones!!)

His Sunday Best

I assumed this man was on his way to, or from Church, given that it was a Sunday, and he was impeccably dressed in a three piece suit despite the heat and humidity.   I was impressed with how elegant he looked, from his neatly combed hair to his freshly polished shoes.  The suit fits him perfectly, and I love his bold choice of tie.  Definitely a man who takes pride in his appearance, and I'd bet he's been dressing well his entire life.

Fringe Festival Style Part 2

I love so much about this woman's outfit--the skirt/pants, the shoes, but especially the necklace.  That is one awesomely cool piece of jewellery and it fits so well with the rest of what she's wearing. By the way, if you are heading to the Fringe Festival, try to catch "Monster" or "the Bike Trip"--both are one-man shows with great material and excellent performances.

Fringe Festival Style

Like the pink and green paired with the dark denim jacket on this Fringe Festival fan, but what really caught my eye were THE SHOES!
and not just any shoes, but pink and turquoise Fluevogs!  For those of you who are not already familiar with the joys of John Fluevog shoes, take a look at their online store here

Girls in Their Summer Dresses Pt. 2

I think she looks comfortable and pretty in her ruffles and layers.  The small print suits her tiny frame.

Normally, I'm not a big fan of white and ruffles--the two together often scream "Wedding Dress"--but not in this case.  I think the casual, shift-dress shape with the added interest of the ruffles made it a  great choice for Convocation.

The Soccer Fans

These two young men, who moved to London from Mexico two years ago, were celebrating Mexico's win over France in the World Cup.  I was originally drawn to the mix of bright colours they were wearing (Red Converse!), but I also had an opportunity to chat with them for a while, and was completely charmed by their eagerness to engage in an enthusiastic and lengthy conversation with a complete stranger, something native Londoners are not prone to do.

It's a Wrap

Another of my favourite dresses from Convocation week--love the retro print and the curve-emphasizing wrap style makes her body look fabulous.  Also a great example of how you can change the mood of a dress with accessories--she was wearing it with heels earlier, and then changed to the casual bag and Birkenstocks.

Girls in Their Summer Dresses

This week was Convocation at UWO, which has often provided me with an excuse to rail on and on about how no one knows how to dress appropriately for a special occasion anymore.   But these three young women gave me hope that perhaps not everyone thinks that form-fitting dresses that barely cover your lady parts are appropriate to wear when accepting your degree in front of your parents.   All three look fresh-faced and very pretty in their simple, but stylish, summer dresses and heels.  Congratulations, girls, well done!

How to Wear a 1950's Dress, 60 Years Later

As a fan of clothing styles from the 1930's - 1960's, and a holder of the belief that there is nothing more flattering on a woman than a little summer dress (in the summer, provided the dress fits),  I was very happy to run across this young woman wearing what I would consider the perfect summer outfit.  The dress, with the fitted waist/full skirt style popular in the 50's, fits her well, is a good length, and looks very modern with the purple sandals.

Stripes!

I love to see men wearing brightly coloured dress shirts, but it doesn't happen very often here.  I think that men in Europe are much more into coloured and patterned dress shirts, and in fact, this man bought his gorgeous striped shirt in Paris (France, not Ontario).

The Fringed Scarf

It was a bit cool the other day for just a summer dress, so this young woman added some layers, including a pretty fringed scarf.  I like her suede tie-at-the-back boots too.

Standout Summer Accessories

Easily the most interesting looking shoe/sandal hybrid I've seen this year--the colour and shape are beautiful, and I could see wearing these with everything!

This bag caught my eye because of the print, and it took me a minute to realize it was an actual Coach bag.  I liked how it looked against the background of the plaid shirt, and the fun print and shape made it more interesting than other bags I've seen from the same brand.

On The Bus...Echoes of James Dean

I like the mix of the James Dean and Rockabilly influence here.  So many details--the hair, all-black slim silhouette, cuffed pants, old school "Mom & Dad" tattoo, and of course the shades.

It's All There in Black and White...and Silver

An example of how some interesting accessories can make simple pieces into a great outfit.  The jewellery, shoes, nail polish, even her hair, work perfectly with what she's wearing!

Call for Guest Posters

A reader who was not happy with my bicycle post from yesterday made an interesting suggestion that perhaps I should get other people to contribute to my blog, since obviously, I can't be everywhere at once.  Of course, as this is my blog, I would prefer the main focus to be on what I find inspiring, not what someone else likes, but I agree that much of whether I get a blog-worthy photograph depends on timing and luck, and I am certain there are people in London who should appear on this blog, but I may never see them.  That's where you come in.  If you have a friend, neighbour, family member, or co-worker that you think has great personal style (ie. stands out, dresses to express their personality), why not send me a photo, and throughout the month of June I will post some of the best ones on my blog.  Photos will be accepted from June 7th through to June 30th, and should be emailed to: slong88@hotmail.com

A Few Rules
No nudity (it's a family-friendly blog)
Subject must reside in London, or surrounding community
Photos should be no larger than 4 MB
Resolution should be at least 100 pixels/inch
Information accompanying photo should include photographers name (so I can credit you), where the photo was taken, and a brief note about what you like about your subject's personal style.
If possible, please have the subject's permission for their photo to be posted on the internet

The Bike

When I am out for an afternoon with my camera, and the most stylish thing I see is a bicycle, it makes me sad.  Not that I have anything against bicycles, I think they are aesthetically pleasing, especially this one.  However, this blog was originally intended to show off people who have interesting, unique personal style.   Step it up people, I don't want to have to resort to photos of inanimate objects

Red Cowboy Boots

Great mix of bright colours and cute accessories, and the red cowboy boots rock!

"F" is for Fashionista

In the post I did about the Handmade Festival that was held on May 8th at the Central Library, I mentioned a woman named Amber Vroom, and how much I loved the cards she made.  I am envious of those who, a) have creative ideas like this, b) have the skill and time to actually produce a unique handcrafted work of art.  I had asked her to make me one featuring the letter "F" (for Forest City Fashionista, of course).  Today I picked up the card, and I love it!  As you can see in the photo above, she incorporated a dictionary page with the definition of "fashion", buttons, and a sleek and stylish dame right out of the 60's.  I've custom ordered some other cards from her, and if you would like to own your very own Amber Vroom creation (or give one as a gift), you can visit her etsy shop
